This watercolor reflects Amine El Bacha’s lifelong attachment to the medium, in which his brushwork grew lighter and more immediate, guided by the flow of water and pigment across the page. Figures and forms emerge through fluid, transparent washes that let the paper itself breathe within the composition, balancing restraint with spontaneity. El Bacha approached his subjects as an attentive observer of everyday life, transcribing what he saw through a distinctly personal, dreamlike lens shaped by memory.

“One can hear music while looking at my artwork.”
Amine El Bacha (1932 to 2019) was born in the Ras al-Nabaa neighborhood of Beirut. He studied under César Gemayel, Jean-Paul Khoury, and Fernando Manetti at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts from 1954 to 1957, before receiving a scholarship to continue his studies in Paris at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and La Grande Chaumière under Henri Goetz. In Paris, his figurative style began to shift toward expressionism, developing a body of work rooted in Lebanese themes and rendered with a musician’s sense of rhythm and color. Beyond painting, he worked across watercolor, ceramics, tapestry, and jewelry, and illustrated poetry collections by Alain Jouffroy and the Lebanese poet Nadia Tueni.
