Marc Guiragossian’s figurative portraits draw on the tension between old-master realism and chance. His brushwork combines the weighted, dramatic realism of El Greco and Rembrandt with the intuitive, unplanned gestures of Surrealist automatism, layering vivid, often clashing color over the human face and form.

For him, the evolution of art is not a linear process, but an inexhaustible exchange between aesthetic moments of the past and present.
Marc Guiragossian (b. 1995, Beirut) is a Lebanese painter, the grandson of the acclaimed Armenian-Lebanese Neo-Expressionist master Paul Guiragossian and the son of artist Emmanuel Guiragossian, born into three generations of painters. He began painting in childhood, holding his first group exhibition, at Galerie Gegenwart in Karlsruhe, in 2008, while still a teenager. His debut solo exhibition, at Mark Hachem Gallery in Beirut in 2016, sold out almost instantly. He has since divided his practice between Berlin, where he is currently based, and a studio in London. His figurative portraits combine the influence of El Greco and Rembrandt with the chance effects of Surrealist automatism, rendered through vivid, clashing color and gestural, intuitive brushwork.
