This painting belongs to Baalbaki’s ongoing depictions of Beirut’s ruined architecture, drawn from two related series that confront the aftermath of war on the city’s built environment. Working in his signature impasto technique, he carves into thick layers of paint with a palette knife, building up the crumbling, bullet-riddled facades of structures damaged in Lebanon’s conflicts. He often sets these dark, ruined buildings against ornate, brightly colored backgrounds, a deliberate contrast between decorative surface and the wreckage beneath.

He has represented Lebanon at the Venice Biennale twice, in 2011 and 2022.
Ayman Baalbaki (b. 1975, Beirut) trained at the Institute of Fine Arts, Lebanese University, and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. He lives and works in Beirut.
