Maged Mikhael’s bronze sculptures reduce the human figure to its essential units, approaching each piece as a block rather than a line, a shift he traces to his years training under sculptor Adam Henein. Many draw on hieroglyphic letters and the seated figure, an ancient Egyptian symbol of power and stillness. The bronze is heavily polished, a mirrored finish that lightens the material’s visual weight, echoing how ancient stone figures were carved to appear graceful despite their mass.

Maged Mikhael
A sculpture becomes a word to be both read and viewed as an image.
Maged Mikhael (b. 1982) was born in Sohag, Upper Egypt. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Helwan University, where he specialized in sculpture, graduating in 2004, before refining his practice under the mentorship of the renowned Egyptian sculptor Adam Henein from 2005 to 2010, a formative influence on his artistic development. Between 2008 and 2011, he received the Ministry of Culture’s full production sponsorship, during which he worked across plaster, bronze, stone, and ink on paper, mediums he continues to work in today. Beginning in 2013, his practice turned toward ancient civilizations and collective heritage, and by 2016 he had developed his signature approach: transforming Ancient Egyptian, Coptic, and Islamic architectural lines and hieroglyphic symbols into abstract, contemporary sculpture.
