This piece belongs to the ceramics Peter and Denise Orlando produced together at their Paris studio on Rue Beudant, active from 1952 to 1968. Peter shaped the earthenware forms, typical of the supple, modern silhouettes the couple favored, while Denise carried out most of the decoration, bright in color and abstract in pattern, work that critics have compared to the tachism of Miro and Klee.

Peter Orlando
His graphic, abstract decoration sometimes evokes the tachism of Miró and Klee.
Peter Orlando (1921 to 2009) was born in Orange, New Jersey, to Italian immigrant parents, and studied drawing at the Newark Academy of Arts from age sixteen. He landed in France with the American army at Omaha Beach in 1944 and married Parisian Denise Delgoulet the following year. After briefly returning to the United States, he came back to France in 1948 on an American government scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1950, he completed a pottery and ceramics course at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, and in 1952 he and Denise opened their own ceramics studio on Rue Beudant in Paris, where Peter shaped the forms and Denise carried out much of the decoration. Their earthenware, typical of the 1950s, took on supple, modern shapes finished in bright color and abstract, graphic pattern. The workshop closed in 1968, after which Orlando devoted himself exclusively to painting.
2007 L’Espace Orlando, a public exhibition space in Saint-Jean-Lespinasse, opens from works donated by Peter and Denise Orlando.
